The Position

At Roche, we believe it is urgent to deliver medical solutions now while also developing innovations for the future. We commit ourselves to scientific rigor, unassailable ethics, and medical innovations. We do this today to build a better tomorrow.

pRED has an opening for a Roche Postdoctoral Fellow (RPF) in Immunology Discovery, part of the Immunology, Infections Diseases and Ophthalmology (I2O) Department. You will be based at the Roche Innovation Center Basel, RICB.

The RPF Programme has the ambition to build and maintain the Scientific Leadership of the future and to provide leading Roche scientists with the opportunity to collaborate with talented postdoctoral researchers, and leading academic research groups, from around the world. One of the key aims is to advance basic science and technologies that will be published in top-rated, peer-reviewed scientific journals, if necessary preceded by priority patent applications.

We are seeking an independent and highly motivated researcher for our RPF position to advance understanding of the mechanisms by which neutrophils contribute to the pathology of mucosal diseases such as IBD and COPD. Specifically, the research project focuses on reverse translation; investigating neutrophil dysfunction in human diseases and then using in vitro systems to interrogate these pathways to further discover new biology.

In this position you will:

  • Contribute to analysis of transcriptomic data from inflamed lung and gut tissue to interrogate neutrophil heterogeneity and dysregulation.

  • Set up in vitro assays to further interrogate cellular processes involved in neutrophil dysfunction in the context of mucosal inflammation.

  • Use molecular biology techniques (CRISPR/Cas9) to gain a deeper understanding of pathways that are dysregulated in neutrophils during inflammation.

  • Investigate how the neutrophil dysregulation identified may be modulated by pharmacological intervention.

You have experience and expertise in the following:

  • Hold a PhD in Immunology obtained no longer than four years ago.

  • Have a track record of hands-on experience with CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing .

  • Have independently performed isolation and cultivation of human immune cells.

If you also bring many of the following skills and competencies, we are looking forward to receiving your application:

  • A solid understanding of human mucosal immunology and myeloid cell (in particular neutrophil) biology.

  • Previous experience with single cell RNA-Sequencing techniques is a plus.

  • Experience in data analysis using R or Python is a plus.

  • Publication(s) as a leading author in top-tier journals.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, a strong team spirit, and like to work in international teams.

  • Excellent written and spoken English skills.

The duration of the RPF project is initially set for two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year.

The start date of this fellowship is on availability. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date on your motivation letter. All applications should always include a CV, motivation letter, and a publication list.
